Tips on Identifying Your Artistic Voice

On you way to become a professional artist, you will be hit with this quesion. Ready?

What is your favorite subject matter?

"Uhhh...I paint all kinds of things." That reponse won't cut it anymore. You need to call out by name the subject matter or style that when people see it they will say "that's you". I am not saying you can only paint horses if that is case for the rest of your life. I am saying identify a particular subject matter that will quickly identify your followers.

I want to share an exercise that helped me find my "voice". Let's get started!

Take several paintings you have done within the past two years. The more paintings you have to review the better it will be to see a pattern.

Now write down the type of subject matter you can identify (landscape, floral, figurative, animals, etc.) Tally up the number of paintings you have that will fall into those catagories.

Now which catagory had the most tally marks?

According to my finding, landscape with man-made structures won by a landslide! I love the capturing mankind's mark upon the landscape.

Hope this helps you find your calling!

Sincerely,

Timothy M. Joe

That was a really helpful piece of advice - timely as it's exactly what I have been agonizing over since I discovered Plein Air painting - which is very different to the graphically constructed studio work and commissioned Portraiture I've been doing for years doing. It's a great formula and I'm going to try it right now, thank you. Love your Landscapes by the way and especially what you said about the "mark of man" on them. In a good way this time!!

Put the wrong web address on last comment, sorry. May not matter but this is the correct one.

You need to list your Carnegie workshop on your upcoming events..
